That’s What Friends Are For

Picture a nostalgic Summer in 1985 with 4 tween friends hiking upstream along a winding neighborhood creek.

They pretended it was a river and fashioned walking sticks out of branches as they bravely fought the rushing rapids of mostly still water.

The group was led by Heather, she was the eldest after all with just a little bit of bossy and know-it-all mixed together in one perfectly packaged, naturally blonde and straight-haired little girl.

Brandy, Richard and Brian rounded out the rest of the group - a motley crew of frizzy hair, dirty faces, gangly elbows and knees wearing the summer’s high fashion couture of jean shorts and flip flops.
After much deep discussion in which all ideas were overruled and Heather sat firmly as dictator and judge - it was decided they would follow the river until its end, leaving behind the suburbia of their youth for brighter pastures and greater opportunities in…well, wherever the river ended.

Their geography was limited as was their grasp of distance and time so claims of hiking to China, Africa or Nevada were exclaimed with certainty by the younger members of the group.

Heather tossed her hair and looked over her shoulder and then proceeded to call them all idiots.

“Don’t be silly! We are hiking to Los Angeles…”
The next several hours the group was mostly quiet as they concentrated intently on their treacherous adventure and the ever-changing landscape of ivy, house, poison oak, backyard, and barking dog all strategically placed in effort to thwart our young heroes.

The group valiantly pushed on.

At the 3 hour mark the group paused and dug deep into their prepared food stores for the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that had been made for each member. No one paused to consider that this was the only food they had packed. Why ruin the mood?

After the snack each of them played along the river bed. Brian tried to catch the baby frogs in his hands. Richard cried that fish were touching him. Brandy wandered into the deeper waters on the far bank of the river.
Suddenly a cry pierced the idyllic stillness of the summer afternoon.

“Help me, I’m stuck!”

Brandy was indeed stuck and also appeared to be sinking. Her eyes were wide and the rest of the crew quickly ran to her aid.

“What’s going on? Get out of there.” barked Heather in her best authoritarian voice. “I can’t! It’s ‘suckmuck’ and it’s got my leg. I’m going down”, exclaimed Brandy, just a little bit breathless, a little bit scared and a smidge dramatic.

Brandy indeed was stuck. It was the dreaded “suckmuck” they all grew up hearing about but had never encountered before today - quicksand in water.
If the schoolyard stories were true, then this was it and Brandy bravely planned her good-byes. She was in it above her knee and every time she tried to pull out she just sank further.

Determined to not have anything ruin her plan of hiking to LA and achieving stardom and riches by tomorrow afternoon, Heather came up with a plan and mobilized the group. Working together as a team they managed to pull Brandy free from what would have assuredly been an early demise, albeit leaving behind one pink flip flop forever lost to the suckmuck.

It was a pivotal moment seared in Brandy’s young mind that went beyond the heroic neighborhood bragging rights of having defeated the dreaded suckmuck. She clearly saw that more people working together were better than one alone - no matter how brave or valiant that individual may be.

After all, that’s what friends are for.
