Backyard Businesswomen Bonfire

If I see a problem, I want to fix it. It’s the curse of being the big sister raised by a highly driven mom.

So, when I saw a few women in the local women entrepreneurial Facebook group say they weren’t sure they’d get their biz off the ground, I decided it was time for an intervention.

I posted an invite to a fun backyard bonfire potluck and storytime around the campfire featuring my mom - who’d been a successful female entrepreneur for 46 years at this point!

I wasn’t sure if anyone would come, maybe 10 people from surrounding towns? I made sure mom was onboard and then did the private FB invite.

It was “word-of-mouth” but the invite requests kept coming in and they were RSVPing “yes”. Since this was my backyard, I cut the invites off at 39 - thinking maybe half would actually show.

It was Feb 1, 2020 and 50 women came.
The bonfire was big, the twinkle lights were on in the yard and you could hear the water fountain.

All 50 women gathered in a half circle several rows deep around my mom. The women wore layers and were wrapped up in warm coats. Some were seated in the chairs we provided, some brought their own camp chairs, and others shared blankets on the grass.

The women were entrepreneurs from many different industries and at different points in their journey from dreamer to startup to struggle to franchise.

Mom began telling stories and sometimes I would share about what that event was like from my perspective or how it had impacted me. The women business owners asked questions. We all were real, raw, vulnerable and supportive. Friends were made that night.

The night was a success and the die-hards didn’t leave until after midnight, long after the bonfire embers had faded.
Immediately after the women took to Facebook sharing their experience of the event. They talked about the connection and the energy of that night and how it had motivated and sustained them. Several called the night “magical”.

Little did we know, very soon after CA was in a “shelter-in-place” and that Backyard Bonfire was the last in-person networking event we had for years. It made the night all that more special and sobering.

I shared with the women some of the quotes I remember my mom saying over the years, here are a few of them:

“It’s not what you make, it’s what you keep”

“When you can’t control the income, control the costs”

“Don’t sweat it, it’s just the terms”

“Always wait 24 hours before making a big decision or a big expense”
“Be your own bank”

“Create your own write-offs”

“Always know the exit.”

“Pay yourself first”

“Women always need to have a secret bank account that is their own”

“Have a plan B. And C. And D.”

“Being an entrepreneur means I’m unemployed every day”

“It’s just money”

“Take a risk, they won’t all be winners but at least you played”

“You live and die by your word”

“Being the first female means working harder and being smarter, but that’s okay, because we are.”

“Relationships are key in business, it’s all about who you can trust and count on.”
“You have to have vision. See what other people can’t.”

“Reverse thinking...that will save you”

“Go against the tide, be a contrarian”

“Trust your gut.”

“Still pools run deep. Be a listener.”

“Don’t compromise your values for money. There’s always more money, it’s easy to come by.”

“Always act you have a million dollars in the bank”

“Scale up. Scale back. Go sideways. Reinvent. It’s your business, your life, you get to create it the way you want.”

“Always be able to come up with a thousand dollars”
“Don’t count on it always being the same. It’s a mistake to think it will always stay small and it’s a mistake to think it will always be big. Bank on change.”

“Cash is king.”

“Always give due credit.”

“Never stop learning.”

“They tried to buy my company over and over but in the end my business was me...and I wasn’t for sale”

And the old school generations even farther back…

From my grandma:

“No party is complete without a clown.”

From my great-grandma with an 8th grade education that bought a gun-metal silver Cadillac with cash and was asked why she did it? ”I wanted it to match my boots.”

There really isn’t anything that replaces the power of determined women working together toward a greater good. Big hug, Dr. Z
